Suggested by my Vogue a couple months ago - I am now reading "Circle of Sisters" by Judith Flanders. It takes place during the Victorian period with four sisters Georgie, Agnes, Louie, & Alice. They all marry artists except for Louie who marries pretty well. Their Husbands were well known artists/poets, and the children they bore became even more so. I have always loved Europe in the 1800's and their way of living. Here for example is something interesting that they did when a child was born : The mother should remain in a darkened room for ten days, and that the baby should not be exposed to strong light or much fresh air during its first month :( another bit of info : Throughout the Victorian period, almost 35 % of the population was under fifteen. Mothers were told that they should 'on no account' sleep in the same room as their babies: children required such a large amount of oxygen that if they breathed the same air as an adult they would not be able to get enough. This book has been soo intriguing along with the photos, the ones of the children have really touched my heart! I've added some of my favorites from the book. One is a sketch of Georgie by Dante Gabriel Rossetti, made in 1860 to celebrate her marriage to Burne-Jones, the photo of the boy reading is Louie's son Stanley in 1876, the house was Georgie's home from 1867 to the turn of the century & the last photo is of Alice's grandchildren Elsie, John, & Josephine - All three had short lives.
